GEICAM’s fifteenth annual review of breast cancer advances (RAGMA2022) called “Artificial Intelligence Will Help Predict Breast Cancer Risk” reveals that it is a new risk assessment model and predicts the development of the disease up to 5 years earlier. The data collected indicate that in the next decade Artificial Intelligence systems will guide breast cancer research, to considerably reduce uncertainty in the disease, drugs, and treatment.

On the other hand, the new model called MIRAI which was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology analyzes mammograms and collates them, to predict breast cancer up to 5 years before.

Regina Barzilay, an artificial intelligence specialist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, believes the system will identify patients who will benefit from the exams. In addition, he suggests that the system will aid early detection of the disease and trials will be required to confirm high-risk cases.

Mikael Eriksson, Head of the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Karolinska Institutet, believes that together with his team they developed a model called RAGMA2022 for the detection of breast cancer risk, through digital breast tomosynthesis. However, the report shows that between 15 and 25% of cases are tumors that are not detected on tests. The analysis also shows that between 20 and 30% of tumors are detected in the cribados.
