Sue Lyon, the actress who at the age of 14 had played Lolita in the Stanley Kubrick version, passed away on December 26 at the age of 73. The announcement was made by the New York Times.

Lolita

Director Stanley Kubrick prepared an adaptation of the controversial book by Vladimir Nabokov in which an adult man becomes sexually obsessed with a girl who at the beginning of the novel is 12 years old and at the end 17. To dodge censorship and controversy, Kubrick sought to star in his film to a girl a little older than 12 years old, Lolita's original age. The director also avoided the most controversial scenes of the novel to focus on the sexual tension between the man and the girl.

In this search for his star, Kubrick saw Sue Lyon in a bikini, who was 14 years old at the time, on The Loretta Young Show. He knew immediately that it would be the perfect Lolita and even Nabokov himself called it "the perfect nymph". The actress would win the Golden Globe for Best Actress Revelation for her role in the 1962 film.

Rest of his career

After Lolita, Sue Lyon starred in about 20 films that include The Night of the Iguana (1964), in which she also plays a seductive young woman, 7 women (1966), Golden Hampa (1967) and a fabulous rascal (1967). Her role in Lolita would be worth Sue Lyon a reputation as a seductive young man of mature and intellectual men and to this, she owes her role in the late 1960s.

By the 1970s he was only doing secondary roles and leaned a little towards Spanish cinema. He participated in Tarot (1973) and in A drop of blood to die loving, a 1973 science fiction film that would take as a reference A Clockwork Orange, by Stanley Kubrick, the director who would have discovered her a decade ago.
